Job Description
Our client is seeking a motivated Junior–Intermediate Protection Engineer to join their growing engineering team, supporting the design and delivery of substation Protection & Control systems across transmission and distribution projects.
This role offers exposure across the full project lifecycle — from design and engineering through to testing and commissioning — within a technically strong, consulting-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities
Protection & Control Design
- Assist in the design and development of protection and control schemes for MV/HV substations
- Prepare and review:
- Protection schematics
- Wiring diagrams
- Control philosophies
- Support the development of detailed engineering designs in line with client and regulatory standards
Relay Configuration & Testing
- Configure and test protection relays (IEDs)
- Perform:
- Secondary injection testing
- Functional testing of protection schemes
- Assist with ensuring correct operation of protection systems in line with design intent
Commissioning & Site Support
- Support pre-commissioning and commissioning activities on-site
- Participate in:
- Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
- Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)
- Assist with troubleshooting and resolving protection and control issues during commissioning
Engineering & Documentation
- Assist in the preparation of:
- Technical specifications
- BOQs and design documentation
- Protection setting files and reports
- Work closely with drafting teams to develop and update protection schematics and drawings
Stakeholder Engagement
- Collaborate with:
- Senior engineers
- Project teams
- Contractors and OEMs
- Support coordination of technical deliverables across projects
Minimum Requirements
- BSc Eng / BEng in Electrical Engineering
- 2 – 5 years’ experience in:
- Substation Protection & Control design
- Practical exposure to:
- Relay configuration
- Testing & commissioning
Technical Skills
- Knowledge of:
- Protection schemes (overcurrent, differential, distance, etc.)
- Substation control systems
- Experience with:
- Protection relays (IEDs)
- Secondary injection testing
- Ability to read and interpret:
- Protection schematics
- Wiring diagrams
Advantageous Experience
- Experience within a consulting engineering or EPC environment
- Exposure to:
- MV/HV substations
- Eskom standards and specifications
- Drafting experience:
- Protection schematics
- Control wiring diagrams
