Job Description

An established renewable energy business is looking for an ambitious Business Development Manager to join its growing team. This is a commercially focused role suited to someone who wants to be directly involved in originating, developing and progressing renewable energy projects across Southern Africa.

The role is ideal for someone with experience in traditional renewable energy business development, including tenders, project due diligence, site and project assessments, PPA processes, M&A opportunities and progressing transactions toward financial close. REIPPPP experience would be advantageous, but is not essential.

The Role

You will be responsible for supporting and driving renewable energy transactions from origination through to financial close. This will include working closely with internal finance, technical, ESG and executive teams, as well as external stakeholders such as lenders, offtakers, advisors, landowners and public-sector partners.

You will be involved in identifying opportunities, managing tender processes, assessing project pipelines, supporting acquisition opportunities, negotiating commercial agreements and helping move projects through key development and investment milestones.

Key Responsibilities

  • Originate and progress renewable energy opportunities across South Africa and the broader region
  • Manage and support tenders, proposals and offtaker opportunities
  • Be involved in project due diligence, including site, commercial, technical and transaction-related assessments
  • Support pipeline acquisitions and M&A opportunities within the renewable energy sector
  • Assist with PPA negotiations and related project documentation
  • Work with financial modellers and internal finance teams to assess project viability
  • Prepare presentations and recommendations for internal investment committees
  • Coordinate with technical, ESG, legal and finance teams to move projects forward
  • Build and maintain relationships with offtakers, lenders, funders, advisors and other key stakeholders
  • Support business development strategy and contribute to market growth initiatives
  • Travel as required for site visits, stakeholder engagement and project development activities

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in the renewable energy sector
  • Experience in renewable energy business development, project development, tenders, due diligence, PPAs or project finance transactions
  • Exposure to financial close processes, even if the project did not ultimately close
  • Experience working on project acquisitions, M&A or pipeline due diligence would be advantageous
  • REIPPPP and Budget Quote process experience would be beneficial, but is not a strict requirement
  • Strong understanding of the South African renewable energy market
  • Understanding of project finance principles within renewable energy transactions
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Engineering, Law, Business or a related field
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable working with Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work with financial models or financial modelling teams
  • Willingness to travel within South Africa and the broader Southern African region
