Job Description
A growing renewable energy company is looking for a Junior Engineer to join its commercial and industrial solar PV and battery storage team.
This is an excellent opportunity for a technically minded engineering graduate or junior engineer who wants hands-on exposure to the design, modelling, costing and commercial development of solar PV and BESS projects.
About the Role
In this role, you will support the development of solar and battery storage projects from initial client brief through to preliminary design, modelling, costing and proposal support. You will work closely with the business development and technical teams to help turn client requirements into practical, financially viable renewable energy solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Review project inputs such as client requirements, electricity bills, load profiles and site information.
- Translate project information into clear technical briefs.
- Conduct site visits where required to gather data, take photographs and verify site constraints.
- Produce preliminary solar PV system designs using HelioScope and internal design tools.
- Build energy and financial models to calculate savings, payback periods and returns.
- Prepare costings and Bills of Quantities using company tools and rates.
- Request, receive and compare supplier quotations.
- Support the preparation of pricing inputs for proposals and tenders.
- Package design, modelling and costing information for the business development team.
- Stay up to date with solar PV, BESS technologies, standards and industry developments.
Requirements
- BEng, BTech or relevant engineering qualification in Electrical, Mechanical, Electromechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 0–3 years’ experience; recent graduates are welcome to apply.
- Strong interest in renewable energy, solar PV and battery storage.
- Strong numerical, analytical and problem-solving ability.
- Comfortable working with Excel and financial or energy models.
- High attention to detail, especially when working with costings and BOQs.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work closely with technical and commercial teams.
- Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel to site when required.
- Right to work in South Africa.
Advantageous
- Exposure to HelioScope, PVsyst or similar PV design software.
- Understanding of Eskom and municipal electricity tariffs, TOU tariffs and demand charges.
- Familiarity with SANS / NRS standards relating to embedded generation and solar PV.
- Knowledge of battery storage applications such as peak shaving and energy arbitrage.
