Job Description
We are partnering with an established Independent Power Producer looking to appoint a high-potential Renewable Energy Strategy & Commercial Associate to support its growing business across multiple functions.
This is an ideal opportunity for someone with a background in renewable energy, sustainability, energy economics, energy policy, finance, engineering, law or business who wants broad exposure to how an IPP operates, from market research and commercial strategy through to regulatory analysis, project development and regional expansion.
The role is suited to someone curious, analytical and self-driven; someone who enjoys digging into complex topics, making sense of information and turning research into clear, practical insights for the business.
About the role
This is a broad, cross-functional role designed to support busy teams across the business with research, coordination, documentation and follow-through on important workstreams.
You will work closely with senior team members across areas such as business development, commercial, strategy, regulatory, trading, legal and project development. The role will involve supporting research into African power markets, regional electricity trading, market entry opportunities and licensing requirements.
Examples of work may include researching SAPP, market entry into countries such as Zimbabwe, electricity trading licence requirements across African markets, regulatory frameworks, stakeholder mapping and broader renewable energy market opportunities.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct research into renewable energy markets, power-sector structures and regulatory frameworks across selected African countries.
- Support market-entry research, including country overviews, licensing requirements, key stakeholders, risks and commercial considerations.
- Assist with research related to regional electricity trading, SAPP participation and cross-border power market opportunities.
- Prepare clear internal summaries, briefing notes, reports and presentation material for senior stakeholders.
- Support the commercial, strategy, development and regulatory teams with ad hoc research and business intelligence.
- Help maintain trackers, organise information and follow up on outstanding actions across different workstreams.
- Assist with competitor mapping, stakeholder mapping and opportunity identification.
- Support internal project coordination and help close out tasks that require research, structure and attention to detail.
- Gain exposure to the broader IPP lifecycle, including development, commercial structuring, permitting, grid, trading, finance and operations.
Ideal candidate profile
We are looking for someone who is early in their career but highly capable, curious and eager to learn.
You may be studying towards, or have recently completed, a qualification in:
- Renewable Energy
- Sustainability
- Energy Economics
- Energy Policy
- Environmental Management
- Engineering
- Finance
- Law
- Business or a related field
Requirements
- Strong research, writing and analytical skills.
- Genuine interest in renewable energy, African power markets, IPPs and electricity trading.
- Ability to take a broad or loosely defined question and turn it into a structured, useful piece of work.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow through on tasks.
- Comfortable working across different teams and business functions.
- Good Excel, PowerPoint and general business communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, ask the right questions and take initiative.
- Previous exposure to renewable energy, sustainability, energy policy, project finance, trading or infrastructure would be advantageous, but not essential.
What would make someone stand out
- Understanding of IPPs, electricity markets or power-sector reform.
- Interest in SAPP, cross-border trading or African energy markets.
- Experience preparing research reports, market-entry assessments or regulatory summaries.
- Strong commercial curiosity, not just researching information, but understanding why it matters to the business.
- Someone who is proactive, organised and comfortable working in a fast-moving environment.
Why this role?
This is a strong entry point into the IPP environment for someone who wants to build a career in renewable energy, energy markets, strategy, project development or commercial functions.
You will gain exposure to multiple areas of the business, work closely with experienced professionals and contribute to meaningful research and strategic growth initiatives across the African energy market.
