Job Description
We seek a hands-on Electrical Technician to operate and maintain our 5 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant with integrated battery storage. You will ensure reliable 24/7 power production by performing routine inspections, preventive and corrective maintenance, and authorized switching of electrical equipment. The role requires strict adherence to safety protocols (LOTO/permit-to-work, OHS Act, etc.) and the ability to work on-site accommodation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor plant performance continuously (using SCADA); log data and alarms; track underperformance or faults.
- Conduct scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on PV arrays, inverters, transformers, batteries and related balance-of-plant equipment. Perform fault diagnostics and repairs on electrical systems.
- Execute authorized MV/HV switching (e.g. isolating transformers, feeders) under approved procedures; issue and manage permits for electrical work (Lock-Out/Tag-Out).
- Carry out substation inspections (thermal scans, torque checks, visual) and ensure site cleanliness (vegetation control, equipment protection). Oversee external contractors (e.g. cleaners, security) as needed.
- Maintain accurate records: fill work orders, service reports, switching logs and incident reports in the plant management system.
- Ensure compliance with all HSE requirements: participate in toolbox talks, emergency drills, and stop operations if safety is at risk. Use personal protective equipment and promote a safety-first culture.
- Assist in planning maintenance schedules and spare parts inventory. Support the Plant Manager and senior technicians with training and ad-hoc technical projects.
Required Qualifications & Certifications:
- Electrical Trade Certificate (ex. Red Seal Electrician) or equivalent technical qualification.
- Minimum N3/N4 in Electrical Engineering (or similar technical certificate).
- ORHVS (High-Voltage Authorization) certification – mandatory for this role. Must be legally authorized as an Authorized Person for HV switching (or willing to obtain certification immediately).
- Valid 3-phase Wireman’s Licence or equivalent (Installation Electrician) where applicable.
- Proof of safety training: First Aid and LOTO/Permit-to-Work course certificates (or commitment to obtain quickly).
- Valid South African driver’s license (Code B or higher) and willingness to travel to project sites.
Experience & Skills:
- 3–5+ years of hands-on experience in solar PV plant operations, electrical maintenance or power plant O&M. Experience with battery storage systems (BESS) is advantageous.
- Demonstrated fault-finding and troubleshooting skills on electrical equipment. Experience reading wiring diagrams and using diagnostic tools.
- Familiarity with electrical SCADA systems and communication protocols (RTU, PLC) is a plus.
- Solid understanding of medium/high-voltage power systems and switchgear. Experience performing thermographic inspections or predictive maintenance will be valued.
- Computer literate (MS Office) for reporting and system updates. Good verbal and written communication in English.
Health & Safety Duties:
- Act as a safety leader on site: strictly enforce the OHS Act, PPE use, and site safety rules.
- Prepare and review Work Permits (LOTO), conduct daily safety briefings, and maintain a clean work area.
- Obtain/maintain a medical fitness certificate per Annexure 3 (OHS Act) as required for electrical personnel.
